Parenting On Purpose: Guiding Children
3 Ways We Guide Our Children
1) Nurturing them through love and affirmation.
Mark 10:13-16 People were bringing little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them, but the disciples rebuked them. 14 When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 15 Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” 16 And he took the children in his arms, placed his hands on them and blessed them. NIV
Psalms 103:13 As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him. NIV
2) Training them to a place of independence.
Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it. NKJV
3) Lovingly correcting them when needed.
Proverbs 13:24 Those who spare the rod of discipline hate their children. Those who love their children care enough to discipline them. NLT
Proverbs 13:24 A refusal to correct is a refusal to love; love your children by disciplining them. MSG
Guidelines for Correction
1) Ask yourself 2 questions:
Is the behavior I am about to correct truly destructive to my child?
Will it be detrimental to his/her future if I allow it to continue?
2) Correct out of love, never out of anger.
3) Explain why they are being corrected.
4) Consequences should be logical and age appropriate.
