Tough Issues: Work Like

A Biblical View of Work

  1. Work matters to God.

Exodus 20:9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work.  NIV

John 15:16-17 16 So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him. 17 In his defense Jesus said to them, “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working.”  NIV

2.    Those who don’t work bring shame to their faith.

1 Timothy 5:8 8 Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.   NIV

3.   Our work causes our community to flourish.

Jeremiah 29:5-7   “Build houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce. 6 Marry and have sons and daughters; find wives for your sons and give your daughters in marriage, so that they too may have sons and daughters. Increase in number there; do not decrease. 7 Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.” NIV

4.  A rhythm of work and rest is essential to life

Leviticus 23:3 3 “ ‘There are six days when you may work, but the seventh day is a day of sabbath rest, a day of sacred assembly. You are not to do any work; wherever you live, it is a sabbath to the Lord.  NIV

5.  Regard work as an act of worship.

Colossians 3:22-24   Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to curry their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord. 23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, 24 since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.  NIV
