Son Of Suffering | Week One: Pastor Braden Smith

Suffering: the experience of pain, hardship, or adversity that can occur physically, emotionally, or spiritually

3 He was despised and rejected by mankind,

a man of suffering, and familiar with pain.

Like one from whom people hide their faces

he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.

Isaiah 53:3 NIV

Jesus is called the suffering servant (Slide 3)

37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”

39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”

Matthew 26:37-39 NIV

Point 2: Understand that suffering is a part of the Christian life (Slide 5)

19 For it is commendable if someone bears up under the pain of unjust suffering because they are conscious of God. 20 But how is it to your credit if you receive a beating for doing wrong and endure it? But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God. 21 To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.

1 Peter 2:19-21 NIV

Point 3: Jesus gives us an example to follow (Slide 7)

22 “He committed no sin,

and no deceit was found in his mouth.” r

23 When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly.

1 Peter 2:22-23 NIV

  1. Recognize that your Heavenly Father is present(Slide 8) -

Keys comes out here

  • For God to judge justly, He must first be present, and He always is.

5 You prepare a table before me

in the presence of my enemies.

You anoint my head with oil;

my cup overflows.

6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me

all the days of my life,

and I will dwell in the house of the Lord

forever.

Psalm 23:5-6 NIV

2. Take time to hear His voice

3. Remain in Him

3. Don’t go through it alone

4. Allow suffering to bring about Hope

3 Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.

Romans 5:3-5 NIV

Pass out communion elements

31 “Do you now believe?” Jesus replied. 32 “A time is coming and in fact has come when you will be scattered, each to your own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.

33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

John 16:32-33 NIV
