Relationship Goals: Part Two - Unity

Relationship Goals: Part Two - Unity

Mike Popenhagen

Genesis 1:27-28 (NIV)
So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.  28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it.

3 areas the devil schemes to divide:

  1. Disrupt your relationship with God.

  2. Distract you from your purpose in life.

  3. Destroy the unity in your marriage.

One of the greatest tragedies in marriage is when two people are together but not united.

4 Key Areas of Unity in Marriage:

1. Service to God with our time, talents and treasure

Romans 16:3-5
Greet Priscilla and Aquila, my co-workers in Christ Jesus. 4 They risked their lives for me. Not only I but all the churches of the Gentiles are grateful to them. 5 Greet also the church that meets at their house.

2. Romance and sexual intimacy

1 Corinthians 7:3-5 (NIV)
The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband. 4 The wife does not have authority over her own body but yields it to her husband. In the same way, the husband does not have authority over his own body but yields it to his wife. 5 Do not deprive each other except perhaps by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer.

2 Corin. 6:14-15
Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? 15 What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever?

3. Family traditions, values and beliefs

Deuteronomy 6:5-8 (NIV)
These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

4. Finances

Proverbs 20:21 (TLB)
The wise man saves for the future, but the foolish man spends whatever he gets.
