Mathew 6:2
So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others.

Mathew 6:5
And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others.

Mathew 6:16
When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting.

Matthew 23:25
“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. 26 Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean.

What the masks do to us:

  1. We loose our true identity
  2. No one, not even those we love, gets to see the real us.
  3. I cannot experience the love of others because the mask hides the real me.
  4. We can potentially waste years of missed love, freedom and healing.

How to remove the mask:

Luke 18:9-14
9 To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everyone else, Jesus told this parable: 10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’
13 “But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’
14 “I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

  1. Allow Christ to begin a work in your heart.
  2. Be honest with God, yourself and others.
  3. Stop trying to be good and spend time with the One who is- Jesus.
