The Essentials 2.0 - Water Baptism

The Essentials 2.0 - Water Baptism

Mike Popenhagen

Essentials 2.0 Water Baptism

Matt 28:18-19 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Acts 2:37-38  When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”
Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit… 41Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.
Mark 16:15-16 He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved

What Is Water Baptism?

Water baptism is a public acknowledgment of placing our faith in Christ as our Lord and Savior.

Who should be water baptized?

1. Anyone who has repented, turned from their sins and has received Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.

“Now as they went down the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, ‘See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?’ Then Phillip said, ‘If you believe with all your heart, you may.’ And he answered and said, ‘ I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.’ So He commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Phillip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him.”
Acts 8:36-38

2.   Anyone who is old enough to understand the significance of water baptism.

3.  Anyone who has had a spiritual renewal or deepening of faith.

What Happens When I’m Water Baptized?

1.  Baptism is a symbol us dying and entering new life.

Romans 6:3–4  3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.

2.  Circumcision of the heart occurs.

Colossians 2:11-12 - In Him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, 12 buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.

3.  Identification with Christ takes place.

“For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” Galatians 3:27

We’re making a public profession of our faith
